What are Decentralized Apps? Why Leave or find alternatives to Meta?

Apps like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Threads and X/Twitter are prioritizing profit over user safety and responsible information sharing. People are boycotting these apps but are struggling to find an alternative for Facebook.

A decentralized application (DApp) is a type of distributed, open source software application that runs on a peer-to-peer (P2P) blockchain network rather than on a single computer. Decentralized social media platforms empower users by giving them control over their data and eliminating the risk of censorship.

Some Reasons people are leaving Meta Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms like Twitter.

  • Lack of Privacy- constant leaks of private information.

  • No More Fact Checking & More Right Wing Politic Content

  • Racism, Bigotry, Sexism, Transphobia not being corrected

  • Lack of community connections- constantly seeing groups we are not in, rarely seeing friend's posts.

  • So many unrelated ads. Instead of seeing posts on pages you follow you see random ads that are not for you.

  • So much general hate. Over the last 5 years people have become more toxic and say things they would never say face to face.

How can you help?

We are asking that business owners and people do research and start joining. We have taken the initiative making the “Nationwide MeWe Community” group where we can all connect.Take the time to join us even if you want to just lurk a bit. We know that the groups are small but we will never flourish if people don't at least try to give it a chance.

What is our goal?

The group has some goals like

  • Help support local businesses

  • Support our Libraries

  • Mutual Aid resources

  • Learn to be self sustainable

  • Safe space for BIPOC & LGBTQA+

  • Resources for the disabled

  • Educate about fascism & why it’s happening.

  • Meeting 3 Different times a month at different locations to give people a chance to meet at 1/3 meetings 1-2 hours each time.

  • Support our Libraries by trying to get more library cards filled and learn how we can help more.

  • Start classes among each other to be self sustainable or support small homesteads and family farms.

  • Finding and making more Safe spaces for BIPOC & LGBTQA+ communities. We will not be silenced.

  • More resources for the disabled and see what things need to be worked on.

  • Every month choose one cause we can learn more on and help in.

What is MeWe anyway?

MeWe is a global social media and social networking service. As a company based in Los Angeles, California it is also known as Sgrouples, Inc., doing business as MeWe. The site has been described as a Facebook alternative due to its focus on data privacy.
In 2022, MeWe announced it will migrate its platform over time to a blockchain-based system, becoming the first major social network to migrate its tech over to the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), which will make it the largest decentralized social media platform.
